Keep extra pet food in case of an emergency

You probably already know that it’s essential to be prepared by keeping an emergency kit for your family. But what will happen to your pets during a natural disaster? Make sure your pets stay safe by creating a pet disaster kit chock full of everything your little companions will need in case the unthinkable happens.

To set up your pet disaster kit, collect several weeks’ worth of the supplies and food your pet normally uses and eats. Don’t skimp on food, because your pet can get sick if they eat unfamiliar things – buy premium pet food or natural pet food if that’s what your pet prefers. If you make your own pet food, you only need to ensure that you have all the ingredients and supplements you need for pet food preparation. Don’t forget to include can openers in your store of supplies if you opt to purchase canned dog or cat food.

If your pet takes any medication or pet health food supplements, get an extra supply directly from your vet or holistic practitioner. Also include duplicates of miscellaneous pet care items, such as leashes, collars, harnesses, food dishes and litter boxes. Finally, it’s a great idea to purchase a crate or carrier large enough for your pet to call home, in case you need to restrain or transport them during an emergency.

Store your pet food and supplies in a safe, easily accessible location – generally, keeping it alongside your family disaster kit is the best idea. Purchase a special pet food storage bin to make sure that your supplies are safe from mice and other vermin as well as water damage, mold and foraging animals (including your own pets, who may want to break in to your pet food storage containers to snack!). In addition, check dates on your pet supplies as often as you would with your human disaster supplies and swap out expired goods as needed.

Why Are Pet Supplies Important in a Disaster Kit?

  • Pet supplies and veterinary care are difficult or impossible to access during a disaster and its aftermath.
  • Prevent your pet from going hungry during a disaster or becoming ill from being forced to eat “people food.”
  • Just like your human family members, pets can become injured in a disaster and will need basic medical supplies.

Things to Consider When Buying Supplies for a Pet Disaster Kit

  • How long will the items last and what storage conditions are required?
  • How much room do you have to store your pet’s kit and where will it be located?
  • Are your pet disaster supplies easy to carry and transport if you need to leave your home?
