Portable Radios

A portable radio can keep you informed during an emergency

In the course of an emergency, communication with the outside world is of critical importance. Since electrical power is often not available when a disaster strikes, a portable radio which operates with batteries or an alternate power source is a must-have in a disaster kit.

There are numerous types of portable radios, including:

  • AM-FM radios, which are inexpensive traditional radios capable of receiving AM and FM signals. Some radios are exclusively portable FM radios, which are helpful but cannot receive AM stations.
  • Short-wave radios, which are have excellent range and mainly use the upper end of the AM band.
  • Portable two-way radios, which are similar to walkie-talkies, allow two-way communication within a limited distance range.
  • Portable satellite radios receive live satellite signals, but can sometimes have reception issues inside or when blocked by tall trees.

Some portable radios have special features which are particularly well-suited to emergency situations, such as a preset tuning setting to the National Weather Service’s latest weather information. In addition, waterproof portable weather radios can be invaluable in a weather-related disaster where water is involved, such as a hurricane or a flood.

Batteries are the traditional power source for portable radios, including portable shortwave radios, but alternate power sources can offer more options in case of a disaster. Hand-crank radios use old-fashioned elbow grease to power an internal nickel-and-metal hybrid battery to provide a limited number of minutes of radio reception. Solar powered portable radios harness the power of the sun to provide reception.

Look for a portable radio which is lightweight and easy to use, and one which has a large, clear display. Many portable radios have built-in internal antennas, but radios with external antennas usually provide superior signal reception.

Why Are Portable Radios Important in a Disaster Kit?

  • When disasters knock out electrical power, portable radios powered by alternate sources offer the only way to receive weather and news alerts.
  • Two-way radios facilitate communication with the outside world.
