Propane stoves are portable stoves powered by canisters or tanks of propane fuel. These propane gas stoves are commonly manufactured for use on camping trips, but some companies make propane gas stoves for the home. Portable gas stoves make good additions to disaster kits, since they can be used to boil water so it is safe to drink. They are helpful in cooking or heating food so you are not limited to ready-to-eat nourishment in the event of an emergency.

It is important to only use propane camping stoves out of doors, as they are not equipped with adequate ventilation controls for use inside. They can easily produce toxic fumes that can be harmful or even deadly. Most homes do not have indoor propane stoves unless the home is supplied with propane; these propane stoves are installed with adequate ventilation, or they are ventless propane stoves. Propane heating stoves are often used as a source of heat, but are usually not made for cooking.

The simplest propane stoves feature either one or two burners. More elaborate stoves can come with three or even four burners; for an emergency situation, a stove with one or two burners is usually adequate.

Be sure to observe safety precautions when using propane stoves. Use the stove on an even surface away from flammable items to avoid creating a fire hazard. Do not use the stove near tents or in a location that might vent into a sleeping area. Use caution when operating a propane stove when children or pets are nearby. When storing propane canisters, be sure that the temperature will not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Never store propane inside a car or a trailer.
