Sleeping Bags
A sleeping bag can keep you warm in an emergency
In the event of an emergency, the supply of utilities to your home may be interrupted, or your home may not be habitable. Sleeping bags for you and your family can help you get much-needed sleep in times of crisis.
Sleeping bags of good quality can range in price from $100 to $400 or more, so it makes sense to take the time to evaluate your needs before purchasing sleeping bags for your disaster kit. Make sure to have one sleeping bag on hand for each family member, though there are double sleeping bags if couples wish to share a bag. Children’s sleeping bags make sense for the younger members of the family, since they take up less storage space and are made in the appropriate size. Shop at local outdoor supply stores, but also check online for deals on wholesale sleeping bags.
Like tents, sleeping bags are rated according to the coldest temperature they can withstand, but the actual ratings are unreliable. Experienced campers and others who regularly use sleeping bags know to use the manufacturer's temperature ratings as a suggested guideline rather than an absolute. Consider the nighttime low temperatures in your area, and look at sleeping bags that are rated as being within 30 degrees, because you should also adjust for the following factors:
- Sleep style: people naturally either “sleep warm” or “sleep cold.” Chances are good you know just what type you are! Adjust the target sleeping bag rating upward or downward 5 to 15 degrees, depending on which category you fall into.
- Bag fit: a close-fitting bag will keep you warmer, but some people feel constrained in one. If you need a looser-fitting bag, adjust downward by 5 to 10 degrees.
- Dampness and humidity: if the climate in your area is wet, you will feel cooler at night. Adjust downward by 5 to 10 degrees for a synthetic bag, and 10 to 20 degrees for down sleeping bags.
- Wind protection: depends on the rating of your tent. For a four-season tent, adjust upward by 5 degrees; for a three-season tent, make no adjustment, and if you sleep under the stars, adjust downward by 10 to 15 degrees.
