Rain Gear

Foul weather clothing

When a hurricane or natural disaster hits, often you have very little warning. If you don’t have a hurricane kit ready with three to seven days’ worth of food and supplies, you may find yourself at the mercy of the elements. Because hurricane season lasts over two months in North America and can bring some extremely damaging storms, it’s best to be prepared for any possibility.

Rain gear and other seasonal clothing items are imperative when you are weathering a natural disaster. During a bad storm, your heat or air conditioning may go off along with your power. You may find yourself with a damaged or flooded home, or with ripped or broken windows, letting rain, snow, cold and insects in. Having proper clothing and protection in your emergency kit can help you keep your family warm, dry and protected when a storm strikes.

When choosing a raincoat for an emergency kit, ensure that the coat is completely waterproof (not just water resistant) and that the seams are strong. You may want to choose rainwear that is rubber or PVC-coated. If you fear that you will be exposed to the cold, choose a coat that has a down or poly-filler lining. Some coats will state what temperature they are best for. If you live in an area where rain can turn to ice quickly, you may want to choose a warmer winter coat with a waterproof lining. If you don’t have room to store a winter coat, at least pack a foldable poncho into your storm emergency kit.

Rubber boots are important in floods and in a situation where you may be dealing with a lot of damp and wetness from leaking or broken windows and doors. Choose rubber boots that have a strong sole and go up to the middle of your shins, at least. Duck boots and other waterproof shoes may work if you have little storage space, but they won’t protect you in a flood. Again, if you are in an area where you will be exposed to cold, consider getting lined rubber boots to keep your feet warm and dry.

Seasonal clothing and rain gear are extremely important when it comes to preparing for a storm. Keep yourself and your family warm and dry – not only will you be more comfortable, you’ll also be less susceptible to illness.
