Locks
What you need to know about door locks
Installing locks on the doors of a home is the first and best step toward home security. Burglars most often gain entrance to a home through the path of least resistance – the doorway. Leaving an entry door unlocked is practically a request to be robbed, as 32 percent of all robberies take place this way. Another 30 percent of the time, the burglar picks or jimmies the lock. That’s why heavy, solid locks, like deadbolts, are the best lock option.
Door locks come with a grading system that evaluates strength and durability. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) issues these ratings based on performance. An ANSI grade level one lock is the highest quality and best choice. Purchasing a bump-proof lock ensures a burglar cannot “bump” a lock into opening, which is a technique that is now more popular than lock-jimmying.
Security locks are available as keyed or keyless, both for business and residential uses. Keyless locks may work via a digital keypad, fingerprint or card readers. They offer increased security because there is no pin tumbler to be manipulated. Many of these keyless options offer backup key overrides in case it is necessary. These progressive door locks are available in beautiful finishes such as brass and nickel, and are designed to fit in well with any exterior decor, whether on an entry door or security gate.
Combination locks are also keyless, and require a sequence of numbers to be entered. Generally, people envision a jammed high school locker when thinking of combination locks. This is no longer the case. Pushbutton keypads are a type of combination lock that allow for keyless entry. A school-aged child, for example, need not worry about misplacing a key when he or she is equipped with the combination to enter the house.
Why Are Door Locks Crucial to Residential and Business Security?
- A burglar’s favorite entry point is the door.
- New bump-proof locks provide extra security against “bumping” which has become a popular burglar technique.
What to Consider Before Buying Door Locks
- What size will fit your door? If the lock fits poorly, it can be easily manipulated.
- How many doors need locks? Basements and doors leading to the garage need the same security as a front door.
- Moving into a new home? Consider getting the locks changed immediately.
