Tasers

Why carry a taser?

Though “Taser” itself is a brand name, the term taser has been co-opted by other industry brands to apply to their products, and is often used interchangeably with the term “stun gun.”

Like stun guns, taser guns are electroshock devices used by both the police force and for personal security. They operate by firing two electrodes from the gun into the target, creating a connection between the two. Some tasers also have a feature known as “drive stun,” which allows you to simply hold the taser against the target rather than firing the electrodes. A shot from a taser causes neuromuscular incapacitation which subdues the attacker, giving the user the opportunity to escape danger.

Each shot from a taser uses one cartridge, which consists of the two electrodes and enough propellant for the one shot only before a replacement cartridge is required. The electrodes are barbed on the ends to ensure they cannot be removed once they are attached. Taser cartridges for personal use are limited to a range of 15 feet, while those used by police officers range as high as 35 feet.

Many countries prohibit the use of tasers by anyone other than law officials, as they are considered “prohibited weapons” under the Firearms Act. In the United States, it is legal to carry a taser in 43 states. Still, there are heavy legal restrictions on owning the devices, and great measures have been taken to ensure the devices don’t easily fall into the hands of criminals. One such example is Taser brand Air Tasers, which contained an “anti-felon identification (AFID) system” that would release small pieces of paper with the Taser’s serial number on it upon firing.

Be sure you research the legal requirements and regulations in your state before attempting to purchase a taser. If you find tasers for sale, ensure that the dealer is reputable and can provide you with proper training on how to use the device. Both tasers and stun guns are extremely dangerous if not operated correctly.

Why Is a Taser Essential for Self Defense?
